Montreal is known for something so delicious that we might just overlook some of the greatness we can offer. When someone thinks of Smoke Meat in Montreal, the first thing that comes to mind is Schwartz but that is not the only place that offers this great sandwich of joy. If you take a moment just to look across the street, you will see the Main Deli which we visited this past week. We heard the talk that it is just like Schwartz just you don?t have the line up or big crowds, which made us want to give it a try to see if the Main Deli can live up to the hype!

We arrived at the location around 6:30p on a Saturday night which would be considered primetime, there was no wait and we got a booth right away. As soon as you walk in, you see the difference in the?D?cor?between the Main and Schwartz. Schwartz you have a wide open restaurant where they make the food in front of you. Tight seats and big crowds can make the place feel really small. Then you enter the Main and it?s spacious with two seating sections and room to move around. The Main looks more like a restaurant then a deli and you feel more comfortable to have a meal at your own pace. We took our seat and started to look at the menu which had a variety of deli favourites, we already knew what we were having though so there wasn?t a real reason to look at the menu. We ordered a Smoke Meat sandwich to help us compare the difference but instead of fries, we had a poutine with our meal. It?s the Montreal special in our eyes, smoked meat and poutine with a Pepsi!

As we were placing our order and settling in, one area became clear to us that Schwartz had an advantage. The Service at Schwartz was so much more polite and friendly compared to The Main. We can remember the first time walking into Schwartz and we were walked through the whole process of ordering with suggestions and alternatives. At The Main though it was a different story, the woman didn?t seem interested enough to take the time and make us feel welcomed. When she brought our drinks over, she pretty much slammed them on the table and it felt rushed when there wasn?t that many people to begin with. We had to overlook it though to enjoy our food, we didn?t want someone?s bad day to ruin our meal! It is pretty sad though when the busboy who refills your drink is more polite and friendly then your waitress who is making the tip. We give that busboy props for doing his job with a smile!

Now onto the main course! It didn?t take too long for our food to arrive as it was on our table within 15 minutes after ordering. The smoked meat sandwich looked great and had our mouths watering. The main question though had to be answered; we would enjoy it as much or more than Schwartz? Well its true, the smoked meat is right up there with Schwartz and we were surprised. You wouldn?t think it would be so easy to have such a similar smoked meat experience just across the street from their competition. The poutine was standard at most though with the gravy and fries being similar to the others we?ve had but lacked a lot of cheese. The fact though that we can get some great smoked meat for the same price and across the street pleased us and made the experience enjoyable in the end.

So which place would we suggest? Well that is a tough question as both have their strong points. The Main is good for a sit down, relax and have that smoked meat sandwich but if you?re looking for the experience of Schwartz, nothing beats it. We would visit The Main Deli again as an average price of $15 for our meal is compared to the joint across the road but don?t hope for good service as it seems that isnt included in the meal. The Main Deli impressed us with its food and location but we would say that you have to try Schwartz first to know where the standard is. Once you walk away from there and get your next craving for Smoked Meat, then try The Main Deli and see which one you would prefer.
