Top law professor quits Zimbabwe rights watchdog
HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) ? The head of an independent but state-funded human rights commission says he has quit because of a lack of financial support and inadequate legislation empowering it to monitor the situation and punish violations.
Professor Reg Austin, an eminent law professor and expert on international and constitutional law, announced his departure Saturday.
In a statement, he likened the commission, set up under a democratic reform program in 2010, to "a baby for whose birth the parents made no preparations: no nursery, not cot, no blankets, no baby food."
An independent Zimbabwe lawyers group said Saturday the decision to quit by a lifelong campaigner for justice ahead of elections proposed next year confirmed the failure of President Robert Mugabe's government to end rights abuses after years of violations linked to elections.

New insight into cell development and cancer
Dec. 27, 2012 ? Long-standing research efforts have been focused on understanding how stem cells, cells capable of transforming into any type of cell in the body, are capable of being programmed down a defined path to contribute to the development of a specific organ like a heart, lung, or kidney. Research from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine has shed new light on how epigenetic signals may function together to determine the ultimate fate of a stem cell.
The study, published December 27, 2012 by the journal Molecular Cell, implicates a unique class of proteins called polycomb-like proteins, or PCL's, as bridging molecules between the "on" and "off" state of a gene. While all of these specialized types of cells share the same genetic information encoded in our DNA, it is becoming increasingly clear that information outside the genome, referred to as epigenetics, plays a central role in orchestrating the reprogramming of a stem cell down a defined path.
Although it is understood that epigenetics is responsible for turning genes "on" and "off" at defined times during cellular development, the precise mechanisms controlling this delicate process are less well understood.
"This finding has important implications for both stem cell biology and cancer development, as the same regulatory circuits controlled by PCL's in stem cells are often misregulated in tumors," said Dr. Greg Wang, senior author of the study and Assistant Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics in the UNC School of Medicine and a member of UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.
The study, led by postdoctoral research fellows Drs. Ling Cai and Rui Lu in the Wang lab, and Dr. Scott Rothbart, a Lineberger postdoctoral fellow in the lab of Dr. Brian Strahl, Associate Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics in the UNC School of Medicine and a member of UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, identified that PCL's interact with an epigenetic signal associated with genes that are turned on to recruit a group of proteins called the PRC2 complex which then turn genes off.
"In stem cells, the PRC2 complex turns genes off that would otherwise promote reprogramming into specialized cells of organs like the heart or lungs," said Wang.
In addition to its fundamental role in cellular development, elevated levels of PRC2 have been found in cancers of the prostate, breast, lung, and blood, and pharmaceutical companies are already developing drugs to target PRC2. Wang and colleagues determined that the same mechanisms controlling PRC2 function in stem cells also applies in human cancers.
"The identification of a specific PCL in controlling PRC2 in cancer cells suggests we may be able to develop drugs targeting this PCL to regulate PRC2 function in a more controlled manner that may maintain PRC2 function in stem cells while inhibiting it in the tumor," said Wang.
This research was funded by the National Institutes of Health grants (GM085394 and GM068088), the Department of Defense, the V Foundation for Cancer Research, and the University Cancer Research Fund, and was performed in collaboration with scientists at the University of California at Riverside, Rockefeller University, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Study co-authors from UNC also included Bowen Xu, a student in the Wang Lab, and Ashutosh Tripathy, a Research Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics.

? When not to hire a coach

5 Concerns For Small Businesses In 2013
NEW YORK ? In 2013, small business owners will contend with many of the same issues that made it hard to run their companies over the last 12 months.
They're also heading into the new year with a lot of uncertainty. It's unlikely that negotiations in Congress will resolve all of lawmakers' disagreements over tax and budget issues that affect small businesses. And there are still many questions about the implications of the health care law for small companies.
That points to continued caution ? and perhaps slow hiring ? among the nation's small companies.
"Uncertainty is the bane of every small business," says Scott Shane, a professor of entrepreneurship at Case Western Reserve University's Weatherhead School of Management in Cleveland. "Their only rational response is to pull in their horns and slow down."
Small businesses aren't likely to get much encouragement from the economy. It's expected to grow by no more than 3 percent in 2013, according to the Federal Reserve. That's a moderate pace, better than the 1.7 percent that the economy grew during the first three quarters of 2012. But it's also far from robust.
Here's a look at some of the issues facing small businesses in the coming year:
TAXES
Lawmakers are still haggling over what's called the fiscal cliff, the combination of billions of dollars in tax increases and budget cuts. Even if Congress reaches an agreement, small business owners won't have the certainty they need, according to Todd McCracken, president of the National Small Business Association, a group that lobbies on behalf of small companies.
"It almost surely won't be comprehensive enough that we won't be revisiting it next year," McCracken says. He's concerned that there'll be another fiscal cliff in six months ? which would mean more negotiations and more uncertainty.
Many small business owners are worried about their personal tax rates. Sole proprietors, partners and owners of what are called S corporations, all report the income from their businesses on their individual Form 1040 returns. That means their companies are in effect taxed at personal rates, which can be higher than corporate rates.
One of the most important tax provisions for small businesses, what's known as the Section 179 deduction, will shrink to $25,000 next year from $125,000 in 2012. The deduction, which applies to equipment purchases, was $500,000 in 2011. Congress can increase the deduction at any time, even after 2013 has begun. But for the time being, business owners can't count on getting a big break.
"It's a huge change for companies planning on making investments," McCracken says.
It's not known if Congress will extend the 2 percentage point payroll tax cut that workers have had for two years. If it doesn't, consumers will have less money in their paychecks to spend, and that is likely to affect retailers and any other small businesses that sell directly to the public.
HEALTH CARE
Health care has been another source of uncertainty for small business owners. The new year will bring some, but probably not all, of the answers to questions about how the new health care law will affect them. Many will have to devote some time to understanding the law ? or hire someone to help them do it.
"They'll have to get their arms around the law, look at their options, learn more about the exchanges," says John Arensmeyer, CEO of Small Business Majority, a lobbying group.
Under the law, companies with 50 or more employees will be required to provide affordable health care insurance for their employees starting Jan. 1, 2014. During 2013, federal and state health insurance exchanges will be set up, and owners will be able to see how much it will cost them to buy insurance. As the year begins, however, many small business owners don't know whether their states will be creating exchanges, or whether they'll have to go into the national system ? and they don't know what that will mean for their costs.
For some owners, that information will help them decide whether they will buy insurance, or whether they'll decide it's cheaper to not provide coverage and just pay the government a $2,000-per-employee fine. For those who have close to 50 workers, they may decide to not hire more workers in order to remain outside the law's jurisdiction.
LENDING
Don't look for the small business lending climate to get easier in 2013. Owners who are uneasy about the economy, taxes and health care aren't expected to significantly increase their borrowing, especially as many have been paying down debt since the recession. But even those who are ready to borrow are expected to find it's still hard to get a loan. Bankers are unlikely to be more liberal in their lending policies.
Depressed lending levels may be with us well beyond 2013, says James Schrager, a professor of entrepreneurship at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
The problem isn't just that banks are cautious about small business loans. Schrager notes that home equity loans, a traditional source of money for people starting or expanding a business, remain difficult to get, the result of the collapse in the mortgage market in 2008.
Small Business Majority's Arensmeyer is hopeful that a bill introduced in Congress this year to allow credit unions to make more loans to small businesses will get more traction when the new Congress convenes. That bill would more than double the amount of total assets that credit unions can use to lend to small businesses to 27.5 percent.
But he's also not expecting major changes in lending next year.
"Sadly, I don't think we're going to increase our access to capital overnight," he says.
ONSHORING
A trend that's expected to gain speed in 2013 is what's calling onshoring. That's the term for manufacturing that had been done overseas, and that's now taking place back in U.S. factories. Apple Inc. earlier this month said it would move production of some of its Mac computers to the U.S. from China next year ? but many small businesses have already been making the switch. While Apple is an example of a big company moving in this direction, the majority of U.S. manufacturers are small businesses.
There are several reasons behind the trend. As China becomes more of a middle-class country, wages for its workers are rising, and that is lessening some of the appeal of manufacturing there for U.S. companies, says Steven Kaplan, a professor of entrepreneurship and finance at Chicago's Booth School. Over the past two decades, it was the cheaper labor in China that prompted businesses of all sizes to have everything from computers to clothes to food ingredients made in China.
The rising cost of fuel, which has made transporting goods more expensive, is another factor in onshoring.
"Manufacturing in the U.S. is relatively more attractive than it has been in 20 years," Kaplan says.
SKILLED WORKER SHORTAGE
While companies' caution has weighed on the job market, many company owners who actually want to hire say it's hard to find workers to fill some positions.
It's becoming more difficult to find people who have the skills they need, these owners say. Many new manufacturing jobs require high-tech skills. They include positions at factories where computers are used to create products like airplane parts and machinery. And some require several years of training, says Shane, the Case Western Reserve professor. For example: A company that makes metal molds which are in turn used to create automobile dashboards. That takes a machinist who knows cutting-edge processes to make the molds.
"You cannot take someone off the street to do it," Shane says.
Because of changing technology, owners are struggling to find qualified workers in 2013.
"There's a whole level of work that's going to require skills that weren't needed in traditional jobs," says Arensmeyer. He notes that community colleges around the country are offering courses that will help train workers to fill these jobs. But training takes time, and the demand for jobs may continue to outstrip the supply of qualified workers.

What are 3 hardware trends for 2013?
It?s the end of the year and the Mayan apocalypse didn?t happen, and most of us have had a stressful but memorable Christmas. Now it?s time to wind 2012 down and gear up for 2013. One way managers get ready for the year ahead is by looking at what?s out there and popular. As the demand and use of technology grows many businesses are looking into tech related trends.
Here?s our prediction of the top three hardware trends small to medium businesses can expect in the coming year.
Phones and tablets that fly
The processing power and capabilities of both smartphones and tablets are advancing at a rapid pace. From the looks of it there should be an octo-core mobile processor (8 cores) introduced along with increasingly powerful quad-core processors. If an 8 core phone surfaces in 2013 it will give many modern computers a run for their money.
Four-core processors will also increase in power. For example: Samsung is rumored to be working with a new processor that could very well see speeds of up to 2Ghz (on par with entry to mid level computers). Sound like overkill for a phone? Perhaps, but put that processor in a tablet and you could see a mobile device that can handle almost anything.
Regardless of if these rumored processors make it into devices or not, small business owners should expect to see a wealth of phones and tablets that are not only affordable, but are powerful enough to either implement as an extension of the modern desktop, or even replace it.
Increasing demands for BYOD
People have gone gadget happy. Take a look around the office. How many employees have a smartphone or tablet? Chances are high it?s nearly 100%. With the sheer number of devices available at affordable rates you can bet that tech gadgets were a top gift unwrapped on Christmas morning. Come New Year, employees will be itching to bring their brand new devices into the office.
BYOD ? Bring Your Own Device ? is a growing demand and trend of employees. Who doesn?t want to work on the system they are comfortable with? You can expect an increase in the number of requests for employees to bring in their own device. We?re not here to discuss the pros and cons, but it may be time to look into developing a BYOD policy and ensuring your systems are secure enough to support this.
NFC
NFC ? Near Field Communication ? isn?t a new idea, but it is just now starting to make its way onto phones. Google and Android device manufacturers are leading the way on the mobile front and companies like Square are pushing the mobile wallet.
The goal of NFC technology is to allow your phone to be a wallet, and handle transactions wirelessly without the need for credit/debit cards or cash. Google is pushing NFC, and it?s rumored that Apple will integrate it into new versions of their iPhone. If they do this you can bet that there will be a legion of smartphone users suddenly demanding to pay for things on their phone. This could become a major trend of 2013 that all small to medium businesses could capitalize off of.

Richard (RJ) Eskow: For Wall Street "It's Peace On Earth, Goodwill Toward Remington"
Despite an epidemic of gun deaths, the river of gun cash never stops flowing. If you follow that river upstream you'll see that its source lies very close to Wall Street. And the river's mouth speaks with the voice of politicians, whose campaign fundraising is undoubtedly taking place even on this supposedly holy day for most of them.
'Tis the season to be lobbied.
"More than 50 firearms-related companies have given at least $14.8 million" to the National Rifle Association, Bloomberg News reports?-- and that's just the money we know about. The NRA spent nearly $25 million in the last election cycle alone. True to form, the NRA's chief said this week that we need more guns in the schools to end the killing of our children.
That's like spreading a flu virus to stop an epidemic.
But Wayne LaPierre did his job. Everybody's talking about how crazy he is. Nobody's talking about how crazy we are for tolerating this situation - or how immoral our corporate class is for financing it.
Wall Street's investments extend beyond the manufacturers themselves -- to the NRA, and to all the other groups supporting the NRA's nihilistic objective: the total elimination of any and all controls on even the deadliest of weapons. That includes ALEC, the American Legislative Exchange Council, which foments the "Stand Your Ground" reign of terror that so effectively distracts millions of Americans from the true source of their anxiety and hardship.
It's working. As we reported after another gun tragedy this year, "Firearms and ammunition sales rose 45 percent between 2009 and 2010 alone." And the tragedy of Newtown has been great for business all around the country. Just look at a sampling of headlines we've seen in the last week: "Tucson Gun Sales Surge After Newtown" (Arizona Daily Star). "New Hampshire sets record on background checks for gun sales after Newtown shootings" (Nashua Telegraph). "Local gun dealers see sales increase after Newtown tragedy" (Indianapolis local television).
Somebody's making money from these tragedies. But who?
There's hedge fund manager Steve Schwarzman, for one. His Blackstone Group advises the manufacturer of Colt handguns. ?It was Schwarzman who likened the notion of ending his cushy tax breaks to "the invasion of Poland by Hitler in 1939."
Information's limited, ?but other top hedge funds invested in gun manufacturers include Steelhead Partners, Renaissance Technologies, Route One Investment Company, Columbia Partners, Bogle Investment Management, and Millennium Management.?Our review?of the Open Secrets campaign database shows that Steelhead's executives have contributed more than $330,000 to political campaigns since 1990, almost exclusively to Republicans.
Cerberus Capital owns the company whose gun killed children in Newton, and Daniel Gross?reports that its leadership team includes former Vice President Dan Quayle and former Bush cabinet member John Snow. Cerberus founder Stephen Feinberg contributed "$100,000 in August to Friends of the Majority, a Republican super PAC; $9,800 to Rep. Ben Quayle (son of Dan); $30,800 to the Republican National Committee in October; $58,500 to the National Republican Senatorial Committee, and $7,500 to Mitt Romney."
Feinberg and his associates cultivate a reputation for taking a very hands-on approach to their investment -- "blocking and tackling" -- which emphasizes cost cutting and efficiency. That makes it all but certain that they?were fully aware of their investment's lethal implications, especially once they reviewed the company's insurance policies and risk management profile.
"As a firm, we are investors, not statesmen or policy makers," Cerberus said in a statement after the shootings. "It is not our role to take positions, or attempt to shape or influence the gun control policy debate. That is the job of our federal and state legislators."
In other words, we were only following orders -- "buy" orders, "sell" orders...
The Cerberus gun that did the most damage was an "ACR," or "Adaptive Combat Rifle." Manufactured for civilian sales by subsidiary Bushmaster. Remington Arms, also likened to Freedom Group/Cerberus, manufactures the military version. "One Rifle, Many Missions," boasts a Remington flyer. (The deaths of kindergartners is presumably not listed among them.)
Cerberus was reaping millions in profits from the taxpayer from its Pentagon sales through Remington, while Bushmaster catered to the Lanza family demographic. And now we learn that William Spengler, named by police as the killer of two firefighters in upstate New York, used the same Bushmaster ACR -- a weapon he obtained despite his conviction for beating his grandmother to death with a hammer.
Tell me again: Why is it wrong to deny people like that the "right to bear arms"? If we had, two firefighters -- including a 19-year-old dispatcher -- might be alive today. On the other hand, Bushmaster might have lost a sale. And at a list price $2,685 (although it can be found for $1,500), who wants that?
Cerberus said it would sell its interests in Freedom Group to avoid being "drawn into the national policy debate." It was also likely to lose tens of millions of dollars in investor cash for its fund, including $50 million from the New York state retirement fund. That probably had a more immediate impact on its decision.
That's how we make change -- not just with our votes, but with our wallets.
Michael Bloomberg has been a leading spokesperson for more than 700 mayors who've been pushing for sensible gun controls. ? He rightly chastised the do-nothing attitude of Obama and the Democrats after July's Colorado shooting, and mocked Mitt Romney for saying that the way to end gun violence is by "changing the heart of the American people."
How are we going to change our hearts when so much is invested in keeping them hardened?
Now the Death Lobby's insisting that the problem -- the only problem -- is mental illness. But it's odd: The ones blaming mental illness are usually the same people who block funds for the treatment of mental illness.

Shoppers found bigger sales, smaller crowds
NEW YORK ? American shoppers who waited until the final days before Christmas were rewarded with big bargains and thinner crowds. But their strategic deal hunting reflects why stores may not ring up the sales they want for the season.
Although fresh data on the holiday shopping season won?t be out until Christmas, analysts expect growth from last year to be relatively modest. Several factors have dampened shoppers? spirits, including fears that the economy could fall off the ?fiscal cliff,? triggering tax increases and spending cuts early next year.
On Christmas Eve, Taubman Centers, which operates 28 malls across the U.S., reported a ?very strong weekend,? with shoppers taking advantage of all the sales. But many last-minute shoppers across the nation in cities such as New York, Atlanta and Indianapolis said they were spending less than they did last year and taking advantage of big discounts ranging from 30 to 70 percent off.
Kris Betzold, 40, was out at the Fashion Mall at Keystone in Indianapolis on Monday looking for deals on toys, and said she?s noticed the sales are ?even better now than they were at Thanksgiving.? But she said the economy has prompted her and her husband to be more frugal this year.
?We under budgeted ourselves by $400 for Christmas because we just wanted to put that money back in savings,? she said.
Dianne Ashford, 40, who works for a film production company and was at the Lenox Square Mall in Atlanta on Monday, said she was spending $500 on gifts this year, down from the $1,000 she normally spends.
?Times are hard,? said Ashford, who was finishing up shopping on Christmas Eve because she?s been working six days a week. The best deal she found this year was a guitar for her mother, half off at $79
Other last-minute shoppers said they were holding off as much as possible for even bigger post-holiday sales.
That?s grim news for retailers, with many counting on the holiday shopping season for as much as 40 percent of their annual sales. Although the week after Christmas is considered part of the season as well, by that time retailers are backed into a corner since it?s their last chance to get rid of items that have been sitting on shelves for months. The steep discounts during that time mean sales are less profitable.
ShopperTrak, which counts foot traffic and its own proprietary sales numbers from 40,000 retail outlets across the U.S., on Wednesday cut its forecast for holiday spending down to 2.5 percent growth to $257.7 billion, from prior expectations of a 3.3 percent rise.
Online, sales rose just 8.4 percent to $48 billion from Oct. 28 through Saturday, according to a measure by MasterCard Advisors? SpendingPulse. That is below the online sales growth of between 15 to 17 percent seen in the prior 18-month period, according to the data service, which tracks all spending across all forms of payment, including cash.
Marshal Cohen, chief research analyst at the market research firm NPD Inc., said retailers will have to be more aggressive than usual with discounts on the days after Christmas to get shoppers to spend. That could mean some stores will slash prices by as much as 80 percent to clear inventory in coming days and make shoppers believe sales are a ?once in a lifetime opportunity.?
?Consumers are going to be rewarded for waiting until after the holidays,? he said.

ATLANTA (AP) ? Last-minute shoppers crowded into malls and stores to scoop up discounted clothing and toys during the last weekend before Christmas, but many didn't seem to be in the spending spirit.
This holiday season, Americans have a lot on their minds on top of the now familiar job worries.
Consumers in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, which account for 24 percent of retail sales nationwide, were tripped up by Superstorm Sandy. The storm hit in late October and disrupted businesses and households for several weeks.
Shoppers are also increasingly worried about the fast approaching "fiscal cliff" deadline ? the possibility that a stalemate between Congress and the White House over the U.S. budget could trigger a series of tax increases and spending cuts starting Jan. 1. Confidence among U.S. consumers dropped to its lowest point in December since July because of growing concerns about the economy, according to a monthly index released Friday.
And the recent Newtown, Conn., school shooting also dampened shoppers' spirits, analysts said.
This confluence of factors has led to a muted approach to holiday shopping ? bad news for retailers, which can make up to 40 percent of annual sales during November and December and were counting on the last weekend before Christmas to make up for lost dollars earlier in the season. The Saturday before Christmas was expected to be the second biggest sales day behind the Friday after Thanksgiving.
"It's so hard to put yourself in the mood," said Linda Fitzgerald, a 51-year-old nurse from Yonkers who was with her 17-month-old granddaughter at The Garden State Plaza in Paramus, N.J., on Saturday. She was out Christmas shopping for the first time this year.
She planned to spend $1,500 on gifts such as clothes for her boyfriend, down dramatically from $4,000 last year. She had expected to start shopping last weekend, but simply didn't feel like it, facing a sister's cancer diagnosis and worry about the economy and the Connecticut shooting.
Similarly, Deborah O'Conner, 51, from Westwood, N.J., also at Garden State Plaza on Saturday, had intentions of finishing her holiday shopping early, but Superstorm Sandy put a wrench in her plans. She spent all last month helping out her parents and her cousin, whose Long Island, N.Y., homes suffered damage
"I had planned to be out early but it didn't happen," said O'Conner, the mother of three children, ages 22, 19 and 15. "If it weren't for the storm, I would have been done."
Marshal Cohen, chief research analyst at NPD Inc., a market research firm with a network of analysts at shopping centers around the country, estimates that customer traffic over the weekend was in line with the same time a year ago, but shoppers seem to be spending less.
"There was this absence of joy for the holiday," he said. "There was no Christmas spirit. There have been just too many distractions."
After a strong Black Friday weekend, the four-day weekend that starts on Thanksgiving, when sales rose 2.7 percent, the lull that usually follows has been even more pronounced. Sales fell 4.3 percent for the week ended Dec. 15, according to the latest figures from ShopperTrak, which counts foot traffic and its own proprietary sales numbers from 40,000 retail outlets across the country. On Wednesday, ShopperTrak cut its forecast for holiday spending down to 2.5 percent growth to $257.7 billion, from prior expectations of a 3.3 percent rise.
Online, sales rose just 8.4 percent to $48 billion from Oct. 28 through Saturday, according to a measure by MasterCard Advisors' SpendingPulse. That is below the online sales growth of between 15 to 17 percent seen in the prior 18-month period, according to the data service, which tracks all spending across all forms of payment, including cash.
Attempting to drum up enthusiasm, retailers have expanded hours and stepped up discounts. Toys R Us stores are staying open for 88 consecutive hours beginning Friday at 6 a.m. through Christmas Eve at 10 p.m. Macy's opened most stores from Friday at 7 a.m. until Sunday at midnight. And other retailers like Target and Nordstrom expanded hours at some locations.
At the malls, overall promotions were up 2 to 3 percent from last year heading into the weekend, after being down 5 percent earlier in the season, according to BMO Capital Markets sales rack index, which tracks the depth and breadth of discounts.
At The Garden State Plaza, teen retailer Aeropostale discounted all clothing and accessories by 60 percent. Charles David, Cachet and AnnTaylor had cut prices by 50 percent of all merchandise. At AnnTaylor, racks of discounted clothes had been marked down by an additional 25 percent. One dress, originally priced at $118, was marked down to $49 but with the additional 25 percent, it cost $21.30.
But the deals at the mall failed to impress Wendy McCloskey, 35, of Lebanon, Ind., who started her holiday shopping Sunday at the Castleton Square Mall in Indianapolis. The snow storm that blew through the Midwest this week delayed her shopping plans, and a busy schedule with her children also got in the way. She has two teenagers and a 12-year-old, and they are all involved in sports.
She wanted to buy shoes at the Finish Line online, but balked at paying $40 for shipping. In the store, she bought five pairs of sneakers for $390. But she'd expected to see bigger discounts at the mall.
"I was so surprised. I figured they'd have better deals," she said.

Men who drink soda face deadlier prostate cancers
If you drink soda, you pretty much have a death wish to begin with ? and it?s a wish that can come true in so many ways thanks to the sweeteners, chemicals, and actual poisons found in each can, bottle, and plastic cup.
And now, new research adds yet another way soda can grant that (death) wish: prostate cancer.
I?m not talking about harmless run-of-the mill prostate cancers here either, men. You already know those tumors don?t even need to be screened, much less treated.
But every now and then, a tumor comes along that really can kill you ? and these deadly cancers love soda more than Honey Boo Boo loves her ?go-go juice.?
These cancers are thankfully rare. But they?re less rare among men who drink soda ? much less rare, because the study finds that men who guzzle just 11 ounces a day are 40 percent more likely to get them.
That?s not a lot of soda, men. That?s less than a single can of cola a day ? and about a third of what you?ll find in a ?normal? Big Gulp (and let?s not even talk about Double Gulp, Super Gulp and all the other bucket-sized Gulps out there).
If I had to pick an ingredient in soda responsible for tumors, I wouldn?t have to think very long. It?d be the sugar. Whether it?s common high-fructose corn syrup or old-fashioned cane sugar, cancers love the stuff.
But the other carbs that cause blood sugar to spike can also have an effect on tumors ? and in the new study, everything from breakfast cereals to potatoes increased the odds of prostate tumors by anywhere from a little less than a third to a little more.
Unlike the tumors fueled by soda, these were the harmless garden-variety prostate cancers. But you?d have to be on a sugar high to deliberately increase your risk of any of them.
Easy answer here is to follow my diet advice and bring the sugars down to near zero and reduce or eliminate the rest of the carbs.

The world does not count time in 12 month periods like we do, instead they have the seasonal timespans; each lasting 90 days. Months do not exist in Celaradith.
Sumas - The Dry Season, there is very little rain and the temperatures can reach into the extreme heat. The eternal fires on the Shores of Flame seem to burn with more ferocity for the duration of this season. Wheat and similar crops are harvested in the first few weeks. Shops are open from dusk for a few hours to escape the daylight heat.
Auttus - Also known as the Falling Leaves season. The heat is replaced by cooler air and rain once again falls on the world. Fruits and vegetables are harvested during this time, higher elevation areas stock up to prepare for the Long Cold. Shops are open from dusk until dawn as weather permits. Firewood is gathered from what few forests the island has, although most is imported.
Winnas - The Long Cold. Rain falls for most of the time, marshes and river swell and heavy snow falls in the higher elevations. The lower elevations have snowfall as well, often heavier falls mid-season. Shops are open from dusk till dawn, weather permitting. They are generally closed on heavy snow days. Foods stored away from the Harvest are sold at a higher rate. Fishing is halted throughout the season.
Sprinas - The season is sunny and warmer than Auttus, rain often falls. Fruits, vegetables and crops are planted. Shops are open dusk till dawn, weather permitting. Fishing resumes.

And now, for such a service earnestly done, they are to be driven away just because they are old and, what, no longer useful for the family? No, none of these arguments make any sense.
