More than 1,000 homeless New York City pets are looking for places to live this weekend ? and it's free to adopt them.
?
The Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals said it's working with more than 65 local shelters and rescue groups to find the dogs and cats permanent owners.
?
The free citywide adoption event is funded by the California-based Maddie's Fund, a family foundation that supports no-kill efforts. The group hopes to find homes for 5,000 animals nationwide on Saturday and Sunday, and has set aside $4 million to subsidize the adoptions.
?
The Alliance says all the pets have been spayed, neutered and vaccinated.
?
The two-day event has been dubbed 'Maddie's Pet Adoption Days.' Similar efforts will take place in California, Florida, Nevada and Wisconsin.
