BOSTON ? This weekend marks the end of a long tradition. Friday night, hundreds attended Mayor Tom Menino?s 20th and final barbecue and block party in his Boston neighborhood of Readville.
People filled the streets in front of Tom Menino?s house.
Attorney General Martha Coakley was in the crowd. So were candidates for mayor, Michael Ross, Charlotte Golar Richie and Marty Walsh.
Clovida Celestine of the Haitian Adult Day Care Center in Dorchester said she and 35 others from the Center attended the barbecue because they love the mayor.
Others were sitting on Mayor Menino?s front porch to eat their hot dogs, sausages, and hamburgers. The mayor refused invitations to sit. He stood, leaning with a cane, greeting people and reflecting.
?The city has matured,? said Mayor Menino. ?The city has got better. And to understand its diversity. We?re in an economic boom right now and a lot of folks who are here today helped to make that boom happen.?
With 100 or so days left in his term, Menino said that he enjoys every day of being mayor.
