Twitter is no substitute for proper science, laments Nobel laureate

The success of social media such as Facebook and Twitter has masked the lack of technological breakthroughs in the past decade, according to one of Britain?s leading scientists, who is to be announced today as the recipient of the world?s oldest scientific award.

Sir Andre Geim, who shared the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2010, said that he regarded most social media platforms as ?utterly time-wasting?.

They relied on someone ?making billions from a few lines of computer code? rather than the kind of scientific discovery that could drive new technologies for decades to come, he said.
